Skeleton is a playable bird in Feather Family. It was added on October 2nd, 2020 as the seventh and final addition of Summer of Fossils 2020.

Overview

Hatchling

The hatchling is the skeleton of a Harpagornis hatchling, a somewhat small bird. It has a large skull head with levitating glowing eyes in its eye sockets and a short hooked beak. It has a skinny neck, average sized wings and a very short tail. Each foot has three toes in front and one in the back.

Adult

The adult is the skeleton of a Harpagornis adult, a large bird. It has a long skull with a hooked beak and levitating glowing eyes in its eye sockets. Skeleton stands near upright with a long, thin neck and long legs. It has long wings and a short tail bone. Each foot has three toes in front and one in the back, each with a talon.

In flight, semi-transparent ghost feathers appear on Skeleton’s wings and tail.

Actions

Hatchling

Run - Increases ground speed, triggers sprinting animation.
Call - Raises head and wings to make a long high pitched screech.
Sit - Sits down.
Eat - Lightly leans down with left leg slightly stretched forward to bite down then bite to swallow.
Hurt - Falls on its back with legs dangling up and head curled down to its left.
Eyes - Toggles eyes being shut.

Adult

Run - Increases ground speed, triggers sprinting animation.
Call - Lifts head and slightly lowers body to make a long howl-like screech.
Sit - Sits down.
Eat - Lightly leans down and stretches left leg forward to bite down then yank head up.
Hurt - Falls forward with legs stretched back, wings forward, and head curling back to its right.
Display - Leans forward with head facing forward to slightly bob while moving wings and shaking head.
Preen - Cleans left wing with beak.
Eyes - Toggles eyes being shut.
Fly - Skeleton takes flight, can fly for infinite time and hover in midair. Sprouts semi-transparent feathers on its wings and tail while flying.

Trivia

General

Skeleton is the only playable to be the same species as another bird, the Harpagornis skin being a Harpagornis and the Archaeopteryx skin being an Archaeopteryx.
Skeleton and Dromaeosaur are the only playables to have yellow names and stars on their icons, as well as the only Summer of Fossils playables to share a price.
For Skeleton’s original addition, it was planned to not have a set feather price but instead require owning every previous Summer of Fossils bird, giving it a total cost of 9,000 Feathers. This was scrapped for time constraints and it was given a fixed price instead.
Skeleton is the first and only explicitly lore-based playable in the game, Harpagornis being created from Dr. Penguin‘s failed attempt at resurrecting Harpagornis and Archaeopteryx being created from an attempted cure for a wounded Archaeopteryx by Dr. Penguin and Penguin Jr..
Skeleton’s addition was likely unplanned seeing as Argentavis was referred to in the update prior to its release as “FINAL EXTINCT BIRD”.
- Ironically, Skeleton itself was seemingly a second attempt at closing Summer of Fossils, seeing as its creation is what scarred Dr. Penguin from studying fossils.

Harpagornis-Based

When first released, the adult's animations were broken. This was quickly fixed. A similar bug took place around the release of Pelagornis.
Prior to a minor extension of the Cockatiel update, Skeleton’s legs wouldn’t change texture when the texture was changed, as it reused the same texture mechanics as other birds. This made any texture besides rough look very odd, as the legs remained the same.
- This doesn’t apply anymore and it’s unrecorded when this was changed. The most likely answer is from the advanced customization update.

The adult is the skeleton of an Archaeopteryx adult, a somewhat small bird. It has a long skull with a thin beak-like and levitating glowing eyes in its eye sockets. It has a thin neck. It has long wings and a long, stiff tail. Its wings hang down and have three long clawed fingers on each. Each foot has three toes in front and one in the back, each with a talon and the innermost toe of each foot being slightly elevated and curled.

In flight, semi-transparent ghost feathers appear on Skeleton’s wings and tail.

Archaeopteryx-Based

Archaeopteryx Skeleton is the first bird of 2024 to not be directly named in the update hint preceding it, instead being hidden as “???”.
Archaeopteryx Skeleton is the third case of a playable NPC, behind Peryton and Penguin’s April Fools 2024 skins. Archaeopteryx Skeleton is the Archaeopteryx NPC after consuming a medicine in the lab.
Archaeopteryx Skeleton is the only extinct bird to not be added in relation to Summer of Fossils.
