Hoatzin is a playable bird in Feather Family. It was added on May 31st, 2024.

Appearance

Chick

The chick is a small bird whose body is mainly dark brown. It has a dark gray beak and pitch black eyes. The top of its head has some sparse feathers. Its wings have loose feathers on the inner wing then two long fingers with gray claws on each wing’s outer half. It has a medium brown underbelly and some yellow feathers protruding from its tail. Its legs are gray with three toes in front and one toe in the back each.

Adult

The hoatzin is a medium sized bird with a variety of colors. It has a blue face with red eyes and a gray beak. The top and back of its head are orange with long feathers coming from the back of its head that have black tips. Slightly in front of each eye is a group of three sparse black feathers. It has a sand yellow throat and underbelly. Its neck has sand yellow spiky feathers protruding out of it. Its upper back and coverts are blackish-gray while its lower back, primaries, and thighs are orange. Its secondaries and main tail are black. The tips of its tail feathers are sand yellow. It has gray legs with three toes in front and one toe in the back of each foot, with a black talon on each toe.

• Call - Makes a brief squawk noise.
• Sit - Sits down.
• Eat - Repeatedly bites down then bites twice while looking to the sides.
• Hurt - Falls on left side with right leg raised and right wing stretched over its body.
• Display - Raises wings and faces left to repeat cycle of raising wings, then rapidly beating them down and quickly facing right.
• Preen - Cleans left wing with beak.
• Eyes - Closes or opens eyes.
• Fly - Hoatzin takes flight for limited amount of time.

Trivia

• The Hoatzin hatchling is the only hatchling to have claws on its wings. Hoatzin hatchlings have these claws on their wings to assist them in climbing trees until they can develop their wings fully.
• Both Hoatzin stages swim faster than usual and have swimming animations. Uniquely, the hatchling swims slightly faster than it runs despite the adult not being aquatic. That is because Hoatzins often swim to escape predators.
• Hoatzin is the first limited flight bird added in 2024.
