Harpagornis, also known and commonly referred to as Haast's Eagle, is a playable bird in Feather Family. It's the fifth and final bird of the 2022 Summer of Fossils event, being released on August 5th, 2022.

Appearance

Chick

The chick is a small bird with mostly dark gray plumage. It has a light gray underbelly and light gray around its eyes, while the eyes themselves are red. It has pinkish feet and a dark gray beak.

Adult

The adult is similar to Eagle in its general build, though much larger than it and many other birds. Its back and coverts are a dark brown, while the neck is slightly lighter and the head is lighter than the neck. The head has a tuft of feathers at the back. The beak is mostly light gray, with a darker gray tip. The underbelly and underfluffies of the tail are white, while the wing plumage and upper tail are black. The legs are gray with three toes in front and one on the back per foot, with each toe having a sharp black talon. The eyes are yellow.

Chick

• Run - Increases walking speed. Speeds up walk cycle.

Adult

• Run - Increases walking speed.

• Eat - Puts one foot forward and repeatedly bites ground.
• Hurt - Harpagornis falls forward with wings tilting upwards and head facing to the right.
• Display - Lifts wings, then rapidly lowers before lifting them up again and opening beak.
• Preen - Cleans left wing with beak.
• Eyes - Opens or closes eyes.
• Fly - Harpagornis takes flight.

Trivia

• Skeleton and Harpagornis are the first birds in the game to be of the same species.
• Despite it being referred to as Haast Eagle by the NPCs, in the update log and even Shiny herself, the bird was renamed to Harpagornis in the menu upon its release. This thus continues the theme of all SoF 2022 birds' names ending in "-ornis". Despite the change, the two names are used interchangeably.
• There was once an inconsistency where Moa was allowed in the Jungle Server but Harpagornis wasn’t, which didn't make sense considering how they lived together. This was fixed.
• The skull in the lab shares the model with the actual Skeleton's skull, which was a lead that the Harpagornis was to be added before it was officially confirmed.
  • ShinyGriffin clearly knew people were going to guess it based on this hint considering how she clarified in a wall message on The Feather Family that Skeleton would be staying in the game after the release of the 'unknown bird'.
• Harpagornis' release was pushed back by a week, with its update taking three weeks as opposed to the usual two for SoF birds. This was a decision initially announced with the update, due to Shiny wanting to put more effort into the new additions.
• Harpagornis is the only bird to have its scientific name used, despite having a common name.
• Harpagornis is actually an outdated name, as the specie was recently reclassified as Hieraaetus moorei. Shiny however has said that she doesn't want to change its name as Harpagornis is a much more recognizable name for the bird and the genus Hieraaetus, unlike Harpagornis, is not specific to the bird.
